New chair for MSC: Jennie Ciechan from Edinburgh University has been voted in as the new chairperson of the BMA's medical students committee. She started her new term this month.
Independent/NUS student media awards: The third annual NUS student media awards took place at the end of October. For the first time they were run in association with the Independent. The award for best student magazine of 2001 went to Impact of Nottingham University, now under the editorship of Siân Knight, a former editor of studentBMJ. New GMC president: Professor Graeme Catto, vice principal and dean of Guy's, King's, and St Thomas's Hospitals Medical and Dental School at King's College, London, has been elected as the new president of the General Medical Council. He will start office on 1 February 2002.
Electives in Calcutta: Calcutta Ahead, a charity working on improving health and education in Calcutta, is holding an elective meeting. It will take place in January 2002 at Leeds University Medical School and will cover opportunities to go on an elective in Calcutta. Go to www.ahead.org.uk for further information.
Teenagers' unhealthy behaviour: The latest survey from the Schools Health Education Unit shows that young people are setting themselves up for an unhealthy future. Teenage girls are worse than boys with significant numbers smoking, drinking, and starving themselves.
